Program Note

Sarah once thought her mother would always be her hero. But one day, her mother is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Set in San Francisco in 1999, a time of freedom and romance, Tangles follows Sarah, who seems to have it all, a fulfilling career and a loving relationship, until the devastating news suddenly turns her life upside down. Sarah is overwhelmed, while her family struggles to cope. Bound by love and a sense of responsibility toward their mother, each family member responds in their own way: they endure, they struggle, and eventually, they fall apart. As they begin to realize that what has become tangled and knotted is not confined to their mother’s mind, and that they themselves must find a way to unravel it, their mother passes away. And life goes on. Adapted from Sarah Leavitt’s deeply moving graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me, the film combines the emotional depth of the original work with the warmth of hand-drawn black-and-white 2D animation, creating a poignant experience that is sure to bring audiences to tears.
