Program Note
Char Aznable, who fought for the future of humanity but ultimately despaired, launches a terrorist campaign to take humanity into space, and Gundam pilot Amuro Ray fights to stop him. Char’s Counterattack concludes the narrative of the first installment of the series, Mobile Suit Gundam. Since it was produced as a full-fledged theatrical film from the start, it is regarded as the most polished entry in the Gundam series in terms of direction, visuals, music, and action. Unlike previous installments in the Gundam series, which rejected the heroic giant robot narrative and portrayed robots as mere tools in the war between humans, Char's Counterattack appears at first glance to be a return to the original narrative of a battle for the fate of the Earth and humanity. However, beneath the surface lies a deeper examination of the possibilities and follies of humanity, a theme deepened over the course of the Gundam series. (KIM Ikhwan)
