Program Note
Set in the fictional Honneamise Kingdom, this science fiction feature tells the story of Shirotsugh, a young man whose dreams of becoming a pilot were dashed by his grades, until he enlists in the Royal Space Force and becomes a spaceship pilot. This historically significant work was created with the talent, hard work, time, and money of many masters, including YAMAGA Hiroyuki, then 24 years old, who wrote and directed the film; ANNO Hideaki, 26, who designed the aerial battles and rocket launch sequences, as well as the special effects; and SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki, 24, who designed the characters. The creators of this work were also extremely particular about creating an entirely new world, thoroughly conceiving and creating every element of it, from the writing system, religion, and history to the design of buildings, tools, and more, and building a story around it. The film's producer OKADA Toshio once said that the goal was to create a world that wasn't all made by a single person, like the works of MIYAZAKI Hayao. (PARK Changhark)
