Director Sunao Katabuchi Selected for ‘BIAF Honorary Award’

The 21st Bucheon International Animation Festival (hereinafter BIAF2019) selected master Director Sunao Katabuchi for ‘BIAF Honorary Award.’ The BAIF Honorary Award is presented to the director who has made the greatest achievement in the artistry of the animation genre.
When director Sunao Katabuchi was studying film at Nihon University, he met Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and joins Studio Ghibli. His film won the Grand Prize at the BIAF2017, Best Animation of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize, and Jury Award for Feature Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. This film was selected as the best animation of the year by Kinema Junpo since . In 2018, Katabuchi was appointed as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, served as the BIAF2018 jury president, directed the BIAF2018 posters and trailers, and contributed to the establishment of the BIAF identity. BIAF has selected director Sunao Katabuchi and present him the ‘Honorary Award’ to honor and respect his work and life.

Director Sunao Katabuchi who have attended BIAF for three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, has special affection for BIAF. As he won his first award at the International Film Festival with , he made deep connection with BIAF. At BAIF2019, there will be specials screenings and master class of his representative work and .

His major works include where he started as an assistant director, and directed , , and . In particular, has been screening for 1,067 days as of October 14, 2019 and has set a new record for longest-running theatrical release. The director’s cut is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2019.
The Honorary Award will be presented at the Opening Ceremony at 7:00 pm Friday, October 18 with director Sunao Katabuchi present. BIAF2019, the official Academy Award-qualifying international film festival, will be held from October 18 to 22.
